Your impact on climate change

Over 40% of the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions, the main greenhouse gas which causes climate change, actually come from the energy we use every day – at home and when we travel.

Things like insufficient insulation, leaving lights on unnecessarily or overfilling the kettle all waste energy and result in needless carbon dioxide emissions. This section looks at the impact we are having on climate change and what’s being done to help fight it.

We are already seeing the effects of climate change here in the UK. Winters are becoming milder, and rainfall patterns are shifting, making droughts and floods more common.

The UK has committed to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 34 per cent below 1990 levels by 2020 and seeks an 80% reduction in emissions by 2050. There are a number of initiatives that have been set up to help meet this reduction, these include the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (CERT), the Climate Change Levy and the Climate Change Bill amongst others.
